THE EARTH SHOOK
Matt. 27:51 At that moment the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,…. NLT
Some of us remember when Elvis Presley first came on the scene. At the time he was polarizing. He sang songs and moved on stage in way that appealed to young people, but was way too worldly for much of the adult population. One of the songs that has endured time, “I’m all shook up.”
The Bible tells times when the earth was all shook up. There was the time when God spoke to the Israelites at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19:16-19). When the people heard God speak, they trembled, listened, and vowed to obey. It makes me think about how we react today when God speaks. Do we tremble at the voice of God? Do we even listen? Do we even try to obey Him?
Another time the earth shook was when Jericho fell to the Israelites (Joshua 6:20-21). God told the Israelites what to do in order to conquer Jericho and they did it. When they obeyed God, the earth shook and the walls fell down. It is not enough to just listen to what God says, we must take action as well.
We live is very perilous times. Things seem to continue to get worse all the time. We don’t know how bad things may get. Fear grips our hearts. Yet, we are called by God to act. II Chronicles 7:14 calls us to repentance and prayer. Nothing is going to get any better for us until we obey God. We must confess our sins with broken hearts before God and ask Hiim to forgive us. We must put Him back into His rightful place in our lives. We must seek Him. If we do, the promise is that God will hear our prayers, forgive our sins, and heal our land.
Our churches, our nation, we need changed. The question is, “Will we obey God and do what He says? Will we humble ourselves before God, will we admit we have sinned, will we seek His forgiveness, will we let Him change us and our ways?
