THE EARTH SHOOK 2
Matt. 27:51 At that moment the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,…. NLT
As soon as Jesus breathed His last on the cross, Matthew tells us that the earth shook. I also believed the earth served notice. Things happened at Calvary that had never happened before when someone was crucified. It would do us well to pay attention to what we see there.
The earth shook, but the cross stood firm. Isn’t that wonderful news? No matter what may go on in life, the cross stands firm. No matter how evil people may get, the cross stands firm. No matter how many people may try to destroy it, the cross stands firm. The cross stands firm and Jesus calls from it, come. He bids all who are weary and heavy-laden to come. All are welcome. Jesus says, “Come. Come to me and I will give you rest.”
The earth shook and the rocks split apart. The earth shook and the graves were opened. I have often wondered what it must have been like to be in Jerusalem at that time. God opened up the graves and people who had died came alive and wandered all around time. People who people knew, people they had grieved over and buried. People who had an amazing story to tell about God and Jesus.
You would think that all of Jerusalem would have immediately taken notice and believed. Yet, most still did not believe, especially the religious elite who ruled the people. No matter what God does to make himself known, most will not believe. Here we are over 2,000 years later, and most still refuse to believe.
The cross still stands. Do you believe? Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for your sins? Do you believe that the cross is our only beacon of hope for a lost humanity? Is Jesus your Savior today?
