DON’T LOOK DOWN ON ME
Song of Songs 1:6a “Don’t look down on me, you fair city girls, just because my complexion is so dark..” NLT
We do it, don’t we? We look down on others who are different than we are. We know better, but we struggle with not doing it. For some reason we profile a person based on their appearances. We shy away from those who look different and maybe even shun them.
I am reminded of what God told Samuel when he was looking for the one God was going to raise up to replace Saul as king. Samuel knew that the next king was going to be from Jesse’s family. He assumed it would be the oldest son, but it wasn’t. One by one a son of Jesse was brought before Samuel and God told him that it wasn’t him. After looking at seven sons of Jesse, Samuel asked if that was all of his sons because by this time Samuel was confused since none of the sons were chosen by God. Finally, the youngest son, David, was brought before Samuel and God told him he was the one.
God told Samuel that he wasn’t seeing what He saw. Man looks on the outside and passes judgment; God looks on the inside and passes judgment.
Many friendships are lost, and many qualified people are passed over simply because they look different. Shame on us!! Don’t be so quick to dismiss someone because of how they may look. Take the time and put forth the effort to get to know the person’s heart. Ask the Lord for discernment in the process and you will perhaps discover someone very special in your life, someone who will prove to be a true-blue friend for life.
