SALTY CHRISTIANS
Mark 9:49-50 “For everyone will be purified with fire. Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.” NLT
Everyone will be purified with fire. That is, everyone will be put underneath God’s microscope to determine whether or not what they profess to believe is really what they live. God knows exactly who we are and what we are, and He will judge us accordingly. We will be under the microscope of His Word. Anything that He finds that is not right will be burned away. If there is anything left, we will be deemed acceptable to Him.
Just like salt, if we lose what we have, we become essentially worthless. We need to be careful about how we live and think. We need to not wander away from the Lord and become useless to Him. We are created in Christ to serve Him. We are to impact our world for Him. We are to be His ambassadors in the world, representing Him well.
Jesus poses a very sobering question. If we get careless and no longer serve as Christ’s ambassadors to the world, we no longer are deemed worthy of serving Him. How can we think that we can no longer live for the Lord or serve Him and still be okay with Him? I struggle with the thought that we can neglect our salvation, do what we want, and still be in His good graces.
Jesus said we must retain our saltiness. We must diligently take care of our souls. We must not take for granted His grace. We must not let sin take root in us and control us. We must strive to be holy, even as He is holy. There can be no peace with God or others unless we do.
Being a salty Christian means that we diligently take care of our soul, feeding and exercising it properly, so that we will always be useful servants of Christ making a difference in the world for Him.
