ARE YOU ASLEEP?

ARE YOU ASLEEP?

Mark 14:37-38 Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. “Simon!” he said to Peter. “Are you asleep? Couldn’t you stay awake and watch with me even one hour? Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak.” NLT

Are you asleep? Have you been lulled into a state of inactivity regarding your soul? Are you kind of coasting along without really going anywhere? Are you growing in your love for Christ or are you in kind of a stalemate? Have you lost your sense of diligently taking care of your soul?

It is imperative that we not fall asleep spiritually. We must stay awake and stand guard over our souls. If we don’t, temptation will overpower us and cause us to sin. We don’t want to sin, but we will sin whenever we get lazy and not stay awake guarding our souls. Don’t think that you are strong enough to withstand temptation on what you know already. Don’t think that your past strength will sustain you in your present situation. Strength that is not fed and maintained will soon weaken and go away.

If we are not diligent in watching over our souls, we will be of little use for Christ. He needs us to be strong. He needs us to be vigilant in our prayers. He needs us to be strong witnesses for Him. If you are not taking care of your soul, you will fail when temptation comes your way. If you want to please the Lord and be a witness for Him in the world, you will keep alert and pray.

So, what do you need to do in order to take care of your soul? Read your Bible daily with an open heart to God, listening to what He is telling you. Pray daily in close fellowship with the Lord, listening as well as talking to Him. Actively serve the Lord, finding things to do daily that bring Him honor and glory. Share your faith often with others. In other words, don’t be a bump on a log. Live out your faith in a meaningful way in the world where the Lord has planted you.
