Now that I am in the “older” stage of life, I
certainly can see the wisdom of this verse. When we are younger we seldom see
the need to establish habits of life that will sustain us when we grow older.
In youthful energy we plow ahead with reckless abandonment, striving to get the
most out of the moment. We put off until another day the things we know we
should be doing for tomorrow. We live as if we will always be in the youthful
stage of our lives. But, we do grow older and before we even realize it, our
days of opportunity slip away.
We look back upon our lives and often wish
that we had not been so foolish. We regret choices we made and life patterns we
have established. We begin to realize that life would have been so much
different and better had we listened to the counsel of those who had already
walked the walk.
It is
especially true of our spiritual lives. It is in our youth that we are most
likely to turn to the Lord. It is in our youth that we are most likely to
establish godly habits that will sustain us and enable us to grow in grace and
knowledge of the Lord. It is never too late, but it is a lot harder to draw
near to the Lord in our later stages of life than it is in our youth.
Regardless
of what stage of life you are in today, seek the Lord now while you can. You
can’t reclaim missed opportunities, but you can do something about what is your
life now. Don’t let another day or moment go by before you seek the Lord. You
will be glad you did.
