LET GOD CONTROL YOU
Prov. 13:3 Those who
control their tongue will have a long life; a quick retort can ruin everything. NLT
Have you ever spoken a
word you wish you hadn’t? I know I
have. It’s not easy to always keep our
tongues under control, is it? Yet, we
know that we should. We know what it is
like to be on the receiving end of someone’s quick retort. It’s not a good feeling to come under the
gun. So, why would we treat someone else
that way? A loose and uncontrolled
tongue comes from a heart that is not right with God.
Self-control is one
of the ways we determine whether or not God is in control of our lives. His presence influences what we say and how
we react. When we respond out of
character with the character of God it indicates that we have a problem with
our connections to God. The only cure
for that is for us to confess our sinfulness, ask Him to forgive us, accept it,
and then strive to live like it.
And, when the Lord
forgives us, we may very well need to go to the one whom we have hurt and ask
them to forgive us as well. We also may
need to forgive ourselves also, which sometimes is the hardest of all for us to
do.
Seeking forgiveness,
whether it’s from God or our fellowman, is an act of humility. And a humble heart is the only kind of heart
that can draw near to God.
If you have a problem
controlling your tongue, there is no better moment than right now to give it over
to the Lord and ask Him to do whatever needs to be done so that He can control
it. As long as you remain in control of
it, you will ruin everything.
