Neh.. 8:1 Now in
mid-autumn, when the Israelites had settled in their towns, all the people
assembled together as one person at the square just inside the Water Gate. They
asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD
had given Israel to obey.
The people of Israel
had gathered together from all across the country to worship the Lord. They asked Ezra, the prophet of God, to bring
out the Book of the Law of God. What a
wonderful way to start any worship service!
The people wanted to hear what God had to say, not Ezra, not any other
prophet or scholar, but God.
There are so many
gatherings of people today where the Word of God is not desired. In some churches, you would be hard pressed
to even find a copy of the Word available.
Some “pastors” do not bring their Bibles to church. Many people do not want to hear what God has
to say, they would much rather hear things that make them feel good about
themselves. It is not hard to understand
why they might feel that way.
When God speaks, He does not care whether we
like it or not. He does not care if it
makes us feel good or not. He does not
care if we are comfortable or not. He
speaks very plainly and directly to the soul’s need. He doesn’t soften the message for anyone. He speaks of repentance and holy living for
everyone. His standards for life are
high and are applicable for everyone. He
strips us of all of our self-sufficiency and righteousness. When we bring out the Word of God we know
what we are getting. God never has and
never will cater to the likes and dislikes of man.
If you can’t handle
the truth, don’t get out your Bible. If
you want to know the truth, the Bible is the only place you will find it.
